XpoNorth 2016 – 10 bands to check out on Thursday

Xpo North

With 2016’s XpoNorth just around the corner Alive & Amplified picks 10 bands to check out on the Thursday at this years event in Inverness.

XpoNorth

With so many great bands playing at XpoNorth this year it was impossible to pick just 10 to see over the 2 days so I have picked 10 for each day. You can find Wednesdays picks here. It’s going to be a great 2 days up in the Highlands watching some of Scotland’s best bands.

Thursdays picks… (In No Order)

Other Humans

This band is very new to me but I really like their latest single ‘Goths In Hot Weather’ Their electro, pop, rock sound will be a great way to kick of Mad Hatters on the Thursday night. I am looking forward to their set and hearing more from them in 2016.

Mad Hatters, 7:30pm

WOMPS

Born from the ashes of Algernon Doll, WOMPS have made many a “Ones To Watch In 2016” list including my co-host on Radio Summerhall Ian Schofield. Frontman Ewan Grant and drummer Owen Wicksted tend to get various mates to jump in on bass to complete the 3-piece. Can’t make XpoNorth? Catch them at Electric Circus on 12th June.

The Phoenix, 9pm

Indigo Velvet

I been a fan of Edinburgh 4 piece Indigo Velvet since I heard ‘Wooden Pavements’ a few years back. Since then they have went from strength to strength picking a number of cracking support slots and selling out gigs in their own right. If you are a fan of jangly guitars and having a good time get along to Indigo Velvet.

Blackfriars, 9pm

The Little Kicks

Aberdeens The Little Kicks are kind of veterans of the Scottish music scene having released their debut album in 2009. Latest album “Put Your Love In Front Of Us” was a big hit with the critics when it was released in 2013 and saw the band pick up airplay on 6 Music, Radio One, BBC Radio Scotland and XFM. The Little kicks are currently finishing off the follow up, due out in 2017.

Blackfriars, 10pm

Laurence Made Me Cry

Sometimes you hear the opening 10 seconds of a tune and you know you are going to love it. This is what happened when I heard ‘Melete’ by Laurence Made Me Cry. I made it Track of the Week on Summerhall Live and the EP ‘Titan’s Daughter’ that followed was equally as good as the lead single.

Scotch & Rye, 10:15pm

Rebel Westerns

Edinburgh’s Rebel Westerns formed in the summer of 2013 and quickly released debut single ‘Honey Blood’ which picked up air play on Forth One and Amazing Radio and well as a number of independent station. Recent single ‘Nightdrive’ came out in April. Get along to this one if you want a dance!

Market Bar, 10:45pm

Lional

Lional are another band who have featured heavily on the 2016 lists and quite rightly so. This will be a home town gig for the Inverness four piece who have drawn comparisons to Joy Division, Franz Ferdinand & White Lies. The band recently signed to brand new independent label IMOUT Records and released their debut single ‘Season of Salt’ in winter 2015 with a tour of Scotland in support.

Hootannanys, 11pm

The Van T’s

The Van T’s quite simply rocked Electric Circus at this years Wide Days. The Van Thomspon twins, joined by bassist Joanne Forbes and Shaun Hood on drums released debut EP ‘Laguna Babe’ towards the tail end of last year and will release new EP ‘Coming on Age’ on 10th June featuring ’35mm’ and newest track ‘Blood Orange’ Don’t miss The Van T’s

Hootannanys, Midnight

Ded Rabbit

Alive & Amplified favourites Ded Rabbit have continued in 2016 where they left of in 2015 by releasing new music, touring the length and breadth of the country and picking up cracking gigs along the way. They have just released double A-side ‘Only Dating’ & ‘Never Gonna Learn’ following on from 2015’s 3 EP releases the stand out for me being ‘Wake Up In Dream’

Deeno’s, 10:30pm

Colonel Mustard & The Dijon 5

So you’ve had 2 days of music, you are knackered and you are ready to get tucked up in your bed in the Highlands… not a chance. The XpoNorth closing party will have Colonel Mustard & The Dijon 5 providing the entertainment and considering they won “Best Live” at the 2015 SAMAs entertaining it will be. I cannot think of a better way to end the party. Peace, Love & Mustard!!

Ironworks, 11:30pm till Late

That is 10 bands out of 34 playing on Thursday 9th June at XpoNorth. You can view the whole music programme here.

XpoNorth, Various Venues, Inverness, 8/9 June
