Alive & Amplified picks out 4 Scottish bands to check out at The Great Escape this year.
Scotland’s music scene is booming, and that is reflected in the Scottish bands who will make the jaunt down to Brighton next week to play The Great Escape.
Alive & Amplified picks 4 bands from Scotland who you should definitely check out if you are going down. (In no particular order)
Wide Days always delivers when it comes to their showcase programme and 2017 was no exception. Glasgow’s Emme Woods was definitely among the standouts for me. Emme has some seriously great tunes, a unique voice but it’s her infectious personality and attitude that really shines through. The shift from acoustic to a full electric band has definitely propelled Emme Woods into the Scottish spotlight. Look out for special guest Bubbles the chihuahua too.

The Van T’s
Another Wide Days alumni, they played in 2016, and since then they have been non-stop. Multiple festival appearances including a triumphant and emotionally charged return to Electric Fields last August. The Van T’s, who are twins Hannah & Chloe Van Thompson, Joanne Forbes & Sean Hood, released EP’s ‘Laguna Babe’ & ‘A Coming Of Age’ as well as Fun Garcon, which was one of my most play songs on Radio Summerhall last year. Even after all this you feel there is still lots to come from The Van T’s

Yep, Be Charlotte have played Wide Days too. Back in 2015 Charlotte Brimner AKA Be Charlotte played the Born To Be Wide book event at The Edinburgh Book Festival and was subsequently booked to play Wide Days in 2016. She opened the showcase programme with a bang at the Pleasance Theatre. 2016 continued to be an amazing year for Charlotte with multiple festival appearances, a recording trip and tour of Thailand all finishing playing the world’s biggest New Year party in Edinburgh with Fatherson & The Charlatans. 2017 see’s no let up having already been out to SXSW, this showcase at The Great Escape and the album set for release. Definitely check out Be Charlotte before she becomes huge!

If you are going to a festival in the UK over the summer of 2017 there is a good chance Indigo Velvet will be on the bill. They have booked to play in fields up and down the country this summer, and why not? They are the ultimate festival band. Their sunshine tropical pop is a great addition to any festival bill. Edinburgh-based Indigo Velvet ended 2016 with a sold-out hometown show at La Belle Angele and have started 2017 with more sellouts around Scotland. New single ‘Mona’ has featured on Spotify’s Indie Playlist. Indigo Velvet play as part of Scruff Of The Neck’s Alternative Escape.
