Scotland at The Great Escape 2019 – Part 1
Scotland’s presence at The Great Escape in 2019 is bigger than ever with 20 acts playing over various stages and showcases over the course of 3 days. From megastars with 7 weeks at number 1 in the UK singles chart under his belt to the best newcomers in the Scottish scene, there is something for everyone. It’s been a struggle but we have picked out 10 Scottish acts you should mark as highlights next week. Here are our first 5. All these acts have been chosen by Creative Scotland to showcase at the event.
Cloth formed in 2016 and have spent a long period of time writing, rehearsing and recording. The results have seen the Glasgow based trio named one of Radio One’s Huw Stephens name them as one of his ‘Tips For 2019’ We have long been a fan at Alive & Amplified, having featured on various blog posts and podcasts over the last year. Cloth are twins Rachel & Paul Swinton and Clare Gallagher. Cloth will release their eagerly awaited debut album via Independent label Last Night From Glasgow in late 2019.
Thursday – 13:30pm – One Church & 10pm – Queens Hotel
Glasgow’s punk scene is thriving at the minute with bands such as Rascalton, The Dunts & Baby Strange all gathering press and media coverage. Flying the torn up Scotland flag in Brighton will be Heavy Rapids. Having been featured on BBC Radio 1’s Indie Show, Radio X, Amazing Radio & BBC Radio Scotland Heavy Rapids might just be the ones who break through into mainstream over the next few months. Brand new EP ‘Cash In Hand’ will be released in June before the band embark on a summer filled with festivals and tours. Recent single ‘Going Down’ opens with the question “May I Have Your Attention Please?” You got it, lads!!
Thursday – 3:30pm – One Church
Dream pop trio OK Button burst on the scene in summer 2018 with the track ‘The Message’ We instantly loved it at Alive & Amplified and played it on a number of podcasts. Follow up single ‘Beds’ (which came after a haunting rendition of Leonard Cohen’s Chelsea Hotel #1) was immediately made Track Of The Week. They have since gone on to release a number of amazing songs. OK Button are Amber Wilson, Nass Donald & Adam Faulkner, who have all had successful music careers before forming OK Button, with bands such as Gorillaz, Bombay Bicycle Club & Babyshambles. Having never managed to catch OK Button live this is one that definitely has the star icon clicked on The Great Escape app.
Friday – 12:45pm – One Chuch & Saturday – 9pm – Fabrica
Lucia describe themselves as “the rock n roll soundtrack to a teenage dream”. We could just list the showtimes and a track on move on now as I am sold. Having been discovered busking on the streets of Glasgow Lucia have gone on to support the likes of Black Honey, The Big Moon & The Undertones at shows. They first came to my attention with catchy rock number ‘Saturday Is Dead’ I couldn’t get it out of my head for days and it remains a live favourite of mine. If the sun is shining (or even if it’s not) Lucia will provide the tunes to the party. They are playing 3 shows so definitely get one of these in your diary.
Friday – 1:45pm – One Church, 7:15pm – Coalition & Saturday – 8:15 – The Old Market
Tamzene is a singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist from the Scottish Highlands who burst onto the scene in 2017 with single ‘Lullaby’ which gained coverage on a range of radio networks and host of national and international media channels. Latest single ‘ Last Song’, which was released at the tail end of 2018 was featured on a number of Spotify playlists including the massive New Music Friday playlist. 2019 will see Tamzene further release new music and tour gigs and festivals up and down the country.
