We love a Spotify playlist here at A&A and we love when we discover a new band on one of the new music playlists. That happened a couple of weeks ago with REYKO and their latest single ‘Surrender’ We made it Track Of The Week, they got in touch so we thought we would get to know them a little better.
Alive & Amplified – Hello REYKO. For those who don’t know, tell us a little bit about your band.
Hi guys ! We are London based electro pop duo. We started making music as a university project for a music production degree, and kept going afterwards. We have a pretty DIY approach to making music, writing and producing everything ourselves from our west London home studio. On March 6th we’re releasing our debut album which we’re very excited about 🙂
A&A – Tell us about the name REYKO? Where does it come from and what does it mean?
Believe it or not, the name does not have any ‘mystic’ meaning to us. We chose it because we really liked the visual aspect of it, specially when written in capitals. Later we found out it is a female Japanese name
A&A – You have kept a DIY process of making music, with writing, producing and recording all from a home studio. How do you find this process?
We absolutely love it. The whole process of coming up with an idea in order to express something we’ve been experiencing, messing around with it and making it grow into a finished song, to finally release it and play it in front of an audience is probably the biggest reason why we do this.
A&A – We featured ‘Surrender’ as Track Of The Week on A&A a couple of weeks ago. Tell us more about the track
Thank you for that guys ! The actual melody and lyrics were written a while back and stayed in the hard drive for some time. Then one day we came up with the idea of putting those synths in the chorus and making those drums very big and resonating, very anthem-like. When we heard it back we really felt like that was the right production for the song and we could already see the video in our heads 🙂
A&A – You have an album coming out soon and a headline show at London’s The Waiting Room, before 3 dates back in Spain. How excited are you to get the album out and the live dates?
We are over the moon to be able to get to this point, where we’re showing our music to the world and playing it in front of the audience. We feel like we are finally able to show what we’re about as a band.
A&A – We discovered your music when ‘Surrender’ popped up on a New Music playlist on Spotify. How important do you think streaming services are to new bands these days?
It’s a game changer, because it gives bands the opportunity to show what they got and have direct connection with listeners.
A&A – If you could collaborate with one artist or producer, who would it be and why?
The band Neighbourhood. We identify with how they mix different genres and make it into a catchy pop song. The way they push boundaries with their production is inspiring, too.
A&A – We love discovering new music at A&A. Who have you been listening to lately?
A few days ago we discovered this really cool track called ‘Pleasant’ by Sebastian featuring Charlotte Gainsbourg.
A&A – What are the plans for the rest of 2020?
Plans are to release the album and play it in front of as much of an audience as they want us to 🙂 ! Very soon we’re posting new dates for this year.
A&A – If you had to describe REYKO with one track (not your own) what would it be?
Walking on a dream by Empire of the Sun.
