Alive & Amplified caught up with Be Charlotte ahead of her Scottish Tour
Charlotte Brimner AKA Be Charlotte has had a massive couple of years. After bubbling under the surface toward the end of 2015, 2016 really was her breakthrough year. Showcase events such as SXSW in Austin, Texas and at Edinburgh’s Wide Days along with a recording & touring trip to Asia and an amazing summer show at Electric Fields saw Be Charlotte being at the top of the conversation list of many of the music industry’s top dogs.
2017 shows no sign of this letting up. Be Charlotte has already been asked back to SXSW and will showcase at The Great Escape Festival in Brighton in May. She also hits the road next week with gigs up and down Scotland and Ailsa caught up with her last week.
For those that haven’t heard you yet, how would you describe your sound?
I guess it’s a little bit of a mixture of sounds. There are elements of pop, electro, spoken word and hip hop. I like to create songs that have different a sound and feel to each other. I think it’s important to want to make music that sounds like nothing else that’s out there and be able to inspire people with this.
What was the inspiration behind latest single, One Drop?
One Drop started off as vocal and beatbox loops that I wrote on my loop pedal. At first I wasn’t really too sure what to do with it or exactly what it was. I liked the feel of it though and added in the spoken word part as a hook. I wrote the lyrics for One Drop to try and find a way to describe how I was feeling, a mixture of frustration and confusion, I think that comes across in the song.
You recently toured Asia, how was that as an experience?
Amazing!!!! I still can’t believe we’ve have been to that part of the world. I loved it so much and felt like I learnt a lot when we were there. Each gig was completely different and enjoyable in their own way. I feel like we got a great little insight into some different cultures and I hope that we can go back again!
Next up you’re heading out on tour across Scotland, what’s your favourite part of being on tour?
I really enjoy going to new places, it’s exciting to get travel around with my favourite people and getting to perform songs that mean so much to me.
Finally, what’s in store for 2017?
Lots of gigs and writing! I’m looking forward to developing a lot of songs I’ve had for a while. We’ve just announced that we’re playing Live at Leeds, Liverpool Sound City, The Secret Garden Party and Iceland Airwaves.
